BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE EVENING BAGS (Perfect for that Summer Wedding)

This week, I have boosted my selection of vintage accessories with some truly gorgeous, dressy evening bags – perfect for that weddinge looking for an evening bag to match a particular outfit, come and have a look – I may just have the perfect choice !!

1. BLACK & COPPER £40

P1130980

P1130981

Here is a truly fabulous and over-the-top evening clutch bag, in heavily stiffened black raw silk, with clear diamante, copper sequins and bugle and seed beading all over the front flap – an intricate pattern of zig-zag lines forming a border with a large flower motif in the bottom corner.

This has no brand label inside, so I can’t tell you anything about who made, but it has a distinctively Asian or Middle Eastern look about it. I can imagine this worn with an intricately copper-beaded silk evening sari.

2. BLACK & COPPER – £30

P1140978

P1140979 (2)

Here is a beautiful little evening bag, in black satin, embellished all over the front and back with broad diagonal stripes of black seed beading and coppery orange bugle beading – see the close-up for the details. The handle is also beaded all over with black seed beads.

This would be lovely with any black outfit of course, but also anything that involves coppery colours – maybe team this with  Renoir copper earrings – £18

3. 1940s TORTOISESHELL CELLULOID & BROWN LEATHER BAG – £30

P1130992

P1130993

Here is possibly the oldest vintage clutch bag in my shop – sometimes it’s rather hard to date these things – but I think this is probably from the late 1940s / early 1950s. The hard faux-tortoiseshell celluloid frame with its chunky knob clasp gives it away. Celluloid was the successor to Bakelite and was used in the 40s and early 50s. It’s very much lighter weight than Bakelite, so it’s easier to carry and much more versatile – and it can be translucent like this.

This is such a great shape with its ultra sharp square corners and knob kiss clasp – it’s very nice to handle and will looks great with all your favourite vintage dresses. Try this with a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses from the same era for that perfect 1940s vibe.

4. ACCESSORIZE – COPPER SEQUINNED FABRIC CLUTCH – £20

P1140001 (2)

P1140005

This is an interesting little evening bag, in dark copper-sequinned fabric, lined with black satin. What makes this interesting is that the fabric itself is made up of the tiniest hexagonal copper sequins glued onto a backing fabric of dark grey, I think. The lining is black satin with the script ‘Accessorize’ brand label inside. Front and back of this bag are identical.

5. 1970s SILVER BUGLE-BEADED, DUSKY-PINK SATIN ENVELOPE BAG – £30

P1130957

P1130959

A gorgeous little envelope-style evening bag, in a dusky-pink satin encrusted with pretty silvery bugle beads all over the front, back and flap, with tiny seed beads all along the edges, and defining a wave pattern design in the overall bugle-beading. Lined with a pale dusky-pink satin, this has a real Biba 1970s / 1930s feel. Elegant and sophisticated, this is a clutch only envelope evening purse with real Art Deco style !!

6. 1980s MOCHA ZIG-ZAG PLEATED SATIN EVENING BAG – £30

P1130969

P1130971

This is a real beauty – a very unusual evening bag, in gold / mocha zig-zag pleated satin, (and this satin really is quite an ambiguous shade that could be seen as gold or could be seen as a mocha-beige sort of colour, depending on how your eyes interpret it) This also features a beautiful crystal diamanté clasp which you lift to open the bag. The silver-tone metal framework is embellished with crystal diamanté and faux marcasite effect patterns all along the front and the strap is a short silver-tone chain.

7. 1990s GUNMETAL SATIN TASSELLED EVENING BAG WITH DIAMANTÉ – £30

P1120070

P1120079

Here is a truly gorgeous little evening bag, in a beautiful silvery gunmetal grey satin, beaded all over the front flap with large Marquis and Navette shaped facetted diamanté stones – see the close-up for the details. This also has a rather fetching beaded tassel at the point of the flap where it closes with a magnetic stud.

This is perfect for that Summer garden party on the horizon or maybe that wedding a little way off in the Spring ? Just the thing to wear with that beautiful grey satin evening dress perhaps…

8. GUNMETAL GREY, BLACK, BURGUNDY & GOLD BEADED EVENING BAG – £25

P1090382

P1090377

Here’s a fabulous little evening bag, lined in black satin, and heavily beaded in gunmetal grey, black, burgundy, opalescent petrol and old-gold seed and bugle beads all over the front and back in a beautiful pattern – see the close-up for the details. Front and back are identical. No brand label in this so I have no idea who made this, but it’s lovely quality and probably dates from the late 1980s / early 1990s.
